Brazil is the largest country in South America and the fifth largest country in the World. Brazil borders every country in South America except Chile and Ecuador. Most of Brazil lies in the Southern Hemisphere, between the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn.
Brasília is the Capital City of Brazil. Other majors cities include Rio de Janeiro, Manaus, Salvador and Sao Paulo. 189 million people live in Brasil compared with 4.5 million in Ireland.
Brazil got its name from brazilwood a large tree that grows there. The Portuguese name for this tree is "Pau Brasa" meaning "ember wood". Ember is a reference to the red colour of the wood.
Portuguese is the official language of Brazil. Brazil is home to many different indigenous tribes that speak their own languages. Some of these tribes live in the forests like the Amazon Rainforest. Some have never been contacted by outside people.
The Brazilian flag is Green with a yellow diamond and blue sphere in the diamond. The green symbolises Brazil's lush vegetation. The Yellow symbolises Gold and the Blue sphere represents the dark blue sky in the tropics. In this blue sphere are the words "order and progress" written in Portuguese. There are also 27 stars, one Representing Brasilia - the Capital, and the others representing the federal states in Brazil.
Sport is very popular in Brazil. Football is the most popular Sport in Brazil but Beach Volleyball and Formula 1 are also popular. The 2014 World Cup will be help in Brazil in June and July. The Olympics are coming to Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
